Can I write my own musical arrangement for a copyrighted song?

A Customized Arrangement is the creation of your own musical or vocal score. Creating Customized Arrangements is a provision under the Church Copyright License(CCL) agreement as long as:

  1. The song is covered under the CCL.
  2. The copies are to be used to assist or lead your congregational singing.
  3. There are no published versions available. Check with the song’s copyright owner. If a publisher has the vocal or instrumental arrangement available, you would be expected to purchase the music from them.

If these three points apply, under the Copyright License you would have permission to arrange, print and copy the vocal or instrumental arrangements of a song for congregational use. You do not own your arrangement but it is permissible to use as long as the church has an active Church Copyright License.
